What is Mahram in Islam for women?

In Islam, a Mahram is a male relative which is called a family member for a woman. Women can’t perform Umrah without her Mahram whereas a man can easily perform Umrah. Mahram is of two types. In the first type, such males have a blood relation to a woman. In the second type, a male who married a woman is also called Mahram.

If a woman wants to perform Umrah without her Maharam then she cannot perform Umrah because Saudi Embassy does not issue the Umrah Visa to a woman without a Mahram.

According to the Government of Saudi Arabia, a woman can get Umrah Visa and she can perform Umrah without her Mahram if her age is 45 or above then she will travel in any organized group. For this purpose, she should submit a permission letter from her a Mahram in which it is mentioned that she can perform Umrah alone.

In the period of menstrual, a woman cannot perform Umrah and she should abstain from the activities of Umrah because Umrah is an Islamic journey in which Tawaf around the Kaaba and Saee between the Safa and Marwah are included. Women should wait and they can perform their spiritual journey after the completion of the menstrual cycle.
